Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be categorized into two types based on the underlying cause. Passive & Inflammatory.

Passive hyperpigmentation is normally caused by internal chemical imbalances. Typical causes include hormonal imbalances, drug reactions, pregnancy and menopause. Passive hyperpigmentation is more difficult to treat than inflammatory. Unless the underlying cause is addressed, the hyperpigmentation will likely reappear.

Inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This type of hyperpigmentation is normally caused by outside attacks on the skin. Some common causes include over-exposure to the sun, reaction to cosmetic products, direct injury caused by lacerations, picking, or burning. Because inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a direct reaction to an outside attack on the skin, once treated, it should not reoccur unless the attack is repeated. Therefore, if you have hyperpigmentation caused by an over-exposure to the sun, you must wear sunblock or stay out of the sun to avoid reoccurrence.
